The dismissal of Mr. Agyarko comes after the President was allegedly misled into approving the new AMERI deal which had been rejected by Parliament through an Executive Order.
His position has temporarily been taken over by The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Mr. John Peter Amewu, who would act temporarily as Minister of Energy until a substantive appointment is made.
A letter signed by the Director of Communications at the presidency, Eugene Arhin, directed Mr. Boakye Agyarko to hand over his office to the Minister of lands and Natural Resources with immediate effect.
He has come under the spotlight for his involvement in the controversial renegotiated Ameri deal which seeks to alter the original $510 million deal procured by the erstwhile NDC government.
However, the proposed renegotiated deal presented to parliament as analysed by civil society groups including IMANI Ghana, Africa Center for Energy Policy (ACEP), Institute of Energy Security (IES) among others has been described as worse than the original deal.
The notation and amendment agreement was seeking to buy out the deal Ameri Energy had with the government of Ghana under President John Mahama and handed over to a third party Mytilineos for 15 years. Ghana would have ended up paying over Ghc1 billion under the new arrangement.
