Born on March 23, 1994, Mayorkun has risen to become a household name in the country. His mum, Toyin Adewale is a seasoned actress in the Yoruba movie scene, while his dad ‘Sunday Adewale’, doubles as a movie producer and singer.
Mayorkun attended Living Spring College for his early education where he obtained his O-Level certificate before heading to the prestigious University of Lagos to study accounting. He graduated in 2014 and proceeded to partake in the mandatory National Youth Service in 2015.
He started singing with his church’s choir at a very early age; there he was taught the basic rudiments of music and how to play the keyboard.
He started recording demos back in the University but never released any because he couldn’t afford proper production costs. He started off downloading free beats and writing ‘covers’ to popular songs that were released at that time.
Mayorkun on February 1, 2016 tweeted a 14 seconds video of himself playing a keyboard and singing along to Davido’s 2015 smash hit ‘The Money’ featuring Olamide. Davido’s attention was drawn to the video and he replied acknowledging Mayorkun’s talent. Davido proceeded to reach out to Mayorkun about a possible record deal which was signed eventually.
He released his first single under Davido’s new imprint (DMW – Davido Music Worldwide) on April 7, 2016. The song attained over a million Youtube views in just 10 days and rose to become not just only Mayorkun’s debut hit but also the number one song in the country at that time.
