With the two largest political parties both having various vigilante groups within themselves, and disturbing the peace of the country, Nana Addo has called on both parties to disband its groups.
Using the recent sad incident in the Ashanti Region where some members of the HAWKS, a vigilante group within the NDC shot and killed one person, he has vowed to use legislative measures to disband the groups should the two parties fail to voluntarily disband their groups.
“The event of last Monday in Kumasi where the regional and national executives of the opposition, NDC was broken out by acts of violence leading to the tragic death of a citizen has reinforced the urgent need to find that path. I want to use the platform of this message to make a sincere passionate appeal to the leaders of the two main parties in our country , NPP and the NDC to come together as soon as possible, possibly next week to agree on a appropriate measures to bring an end to this worrying and unacceptable phenomenon of vigilantism in our body politics”, he said.
“I have asked the leadership of NPP to extend an invitation to the leaders of the NDC for such a meeting. The security services of the country will be on standby to assist this meeting. If voluntary disbandment by the parties is not feasible then I will initiate legislative means in the matter,” President Akufo- Addo hinted.
He opined that vigorous debate and exchange of ideas should be the true bases of political dialogue and competition in the country not the activities of party vigilante groups.
“What was tolerated over the years cannot and must not be accepted anymore. We must not take our peace and security for granted, not for a moment,” he warned.
“Our children and grandchildren will not forgive us if we compromise our peace and stability. I will not allow this to happen under my watch. The lives of our citizens are too precious to waste, “he emphasized
