Kwadaso throw-outs MCE

The President’s nominee for the post of Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of the newly created Kwadaso Municipal Assembly in the Ashanti Region has been rejected by the assembly members.

Richmond Agyenim Boateng obtained five votes out of a total of 11 votes, which represents 45.5 per cent.

Since Mr. Agyenim Boateng failed to secure at least 50 percent of the total valid votes cast, the president has to either re-nominate him or select a new person for the post.

Per the rules governing the election of MCE as captured in the Model Standing Order part 4 Order 8, 9 and 10, only a person who secures 50 percent reserves the right to be re-nominated.

The fate of Agyenim Boateng now lies in the hands of President Akufo-Addo.

Some supporters of Agyenim Boateng issued threats against assembly members, who they claimed voted against him.

A section of the assembly members, who clearly are not in support of the president’s nominee, also vowed to vote against Agyenim Boateng if the president nominates him again.

“We shall vote against him 100 times if the president nominates him again,” a furious assembly member said, noting that “we don’t want anybody to impose someone on us as MCE.”

Another assembly member stated that their favourite is adored by the assemblymen and the people of Kwadaso and called on government to do the right thing.

Kwadaso is among five new municipalities that were carved out of the Kumasi Metropolis recently to help expedite development and bring governance closer to the people.

According to reports, the government would nominate a new person for the post in the coming days.
