The lead suspect in the murder of Professor Emmanuel Yaw Benneh has reportedly died.

James Nana Womba is said to have passed away last Saturday, October 17, at the Police Hospital in Accra. He is said to have died after being admitted at the hospital.

The mother of Womba, who confirmed the death of her son to Graphic Online's Justice Agbenorsi said armed security officers broke the news about the demise of her son to her on Monday, October 19, 2020 at her residence in Accra.

Ms Talata Nona who could not hold back her tears said she was in shock when she got the information.

She narrated how she received the news to Graphic Online's Justice Agbenorsi at the office of Womba's lawyer.

According to her, she visited her son a week ago and he was in good health.

“I visited my son exactly a week ago and he was in good health and so I am surprised they’re telling me of his demise,” she said.

Womba, who allegedly confessed to killing the University of Ghana law lecturer, had been charged with conspiracy to commit murder and murder and had been arraigned before the Kaneshie District Court.

According to a police source, Womba was rushed to the hospital, where he was admitted for treatment but died.

The cause of his death is not yet known.


On Sunday, September 13, the body of the 66-year-old professor was found in a pool of blood in a supine position with his hand and legs tied.

Investigations led to the arrest of James Nana Womba, who confessed to the crime.

On September 21, this year, a post mortem conducted by one Dr Owusu Afriyie, a Pathologist at the Police Hospital, revealed the cause of death to include strangulation and suspected homicide.

Police intelligence led to the arrest of Badu at Ashaiman while efforts are underway to apprehend the other accomplices.
