The Ahwiaa wood carving tourist center project was started around 1992 during former president Jerry John Rawlings era and continued by former President Kufuor’s administration in the year 2008.
The Ahwiaa wood carving tourist center, when completed, would have had stalls and pavilions for the wood carving production including toilet facility.
Awarded to a contractor, it was to be completed within some few months but this has not been possible for unexplained reasons.
Silver FM's Akwadaa Nyame who visited the center reported that, the center has become a comfortable place for criminals and wee smokers from where they operate from and are said to be terrorizing residents and stealing things from the carvers.
The center is almost completed with one pavilion hosting some wood carving workers while other one has been given out for church service but the stalls which was supposed to be shared among the workers to ply their trade have left to rot. The windows and doors are now destroyed by termites.
General Secretary to the Ahwiaa wood Carvers Association Mr Adom Gyimfi Richard said, the abandoned center is affecting their business leading the workers operating on the shoulders of the road and unauthorized places.
“The authorities told us to move from the roadside to the center but since the stalls wasn't enough for us, some of the workers have gone back to the roadside. The center has been abandoned for almost 27 years now. How can we protect and sustained this business if we don’t have convenience place to operate” he said.
Mr Adom Gyimfi urged government and the Kwabre East Municipal Assembly to put measures in place to complete the project within this year.
The Assembly member in the area Hon Derrick Adu Yeboah expressed worry about the condition of the Ahwiaa wood carving center.
According to the Assembly member, the tourist center which has been abandoned is affecting the assembly Internally Generated Funds (IGF).
He added “we have received assurances from authorities that the problem behind this abandoned project would be solved very soon. The Kwabre East Municipal Assembly, is sourcing funding to complete the center'' he said
