Ghanaians have been encouraged to exercise their civic responsibilities by paying taxes to boost the economy of the country.

The Assistant Commissioner of Ghana Revenue Authority of Kumasi Chapter, Mr. Samuel Sakyi Duodu, said taxation is the lifeblood of every single economy in the world and that all developed countries relied on it to be great.

He said this during a press soiree at the Golden Tulip Hotel, Kumasi on Friday 27, 2018.

According to him, United Kingdom collected £550 billion in 2016 and £690 billion in 2018 whiles Ghana managed to collect £5.5 billion in 2016 and still collected the same 1% in 2018 by GHS40 billion target.

With these statistics, he appealed to the citizenry to emulate the UK in order to strife to the top.

He said that, the government needed financing to be able to make use of the raw materials needed for development and employment for the teeming youth.

He thus made a passionate appeal to the media to co- operate to help educate and inform the citizenry to ensure voluntary compliances, stressing that nobody wants to pay tax except by persuasion or coercion.

“We have everything we need to develop. We need to transform our Bauxite into Aluminum, iron ore alloyed with manganese into steel, salt for the petro- chemical industry and maximum production of electricity from our gas resources. This the raw material needed for development and ultimate maximum employment for our teeming youth,” Mr. Sakyi Duodu reiterated.

The Assistant Commissioner of GRA, Kumasi, called on the resident in the region to help double tax collection.

To help double up taxes paid in the country, GRA has introduced policies such as Taxpayer Identification Number, (TIN), Tax Amnesty, Electronic Point of Sales Device , (EPOS), WHT on VAT supplies and purchases by appointed agents, Tax Holiday for Young Entrepreneurs, Total Revenue Integrated Processing System, (TRIPS) and Exercise.
