In his view, everything that is wrong with Ghana's democracy under President Akufo Addo played out in Parliament during the inauguration of the 8th Parliament.
Mahama made these remarks when he hosted the NDC Caucus in Parliament to lunch last Friday.
''Everything that is wrong with our democracy under this President played out in Parliament that night. Snatching of ballot papers, attempting to disenfranchise voters by getting the Assin North MP out of the chamber, attempting to compromise the secrecy of the ballot, the entry of the military of the chamber,” Mahama said.
“That is an abomination, it makes us look like a banana republic. Because you [MPs] were there, and you were emotionally charged, I am sure the infamy of that event did not strike you but when you see it on TV again, you will see how low our democracy has sunk under this presidency.”
Last Thursday January 7, 2020 legislators elected Speaker of Parliament on Thursday.
The event was marred by some pockets of violence with MPs kicking ballot boxes, Tema West MP Carlos Ahenkorah snatching ballot papers while counting was ongoing and attempted to bolt with it.
He was, however, chased by some legislators from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), sparking chaos in Parliament.
However in the end Alban Kingsford Sumani Bagbin, the former Member of Parliament for Nadowli Kaleo was elected as Speaker of Parliament of the Eighth Parliament of the Republic of Ghana.
Mr Joseph Osei Owusu and Andrews Amoako Asiamah were selected to serve as First and Second Deputy Speakers of Parliament respectively.
