Cladded in red head and arm bands, the irate residents and their acting chiefs chanted, expressing worry over how persons in the area have been losing their lives due to the bad nature of the roads.
According to the disappointed residents armed robbers take an advantage of their bad roads to attack their innocent people even during the day.
One of the acting chiefs of the town, Nana Francis Donkor speaking to journalists said the situation is getting out of hand as these armed robbers attack innocent traders and drivers at least every three days. He revealed that these robbers usually set their traps in Akotokorem, a very worst place on the road where there's no service too, and the robbery.
He cried out that the residents were saved when soldiers came to provide security in the area. But the situation, however is getting worse after the president ordered these military men to vacate the place about some weeks ago.
Nana Francis also cried over how a police station that was put up by the effort of the townfolks had been abandoned for years without any government official trying to officially post police personnel to the area.
Another caretaker Chief Nana Onyina Owusu Prempeh complaint bitterly over a bridge on the road that has become a death trap and robbery joint. He said the bridge which witnessed a shabby work by a contractor has even become worse, after the contractor left it in limbo.
However reacting to the incident on SilverFMs OmanbapaSHOW Police Commander DSP Akowua denied the Chief's allegation of incessant armed robbers attacks. He however admitted some pockets of such attacks in the area but indicated that the Police Service are always swift in responding to these attacks.
''I would be grateful if they could provide some statistics to support these agitations''
''I must say on authority that for about a year now Tontokrom has not recorded even about two armed robbery cases.....I can recall that the community has made such report only once per our records''
''We are up to the task and the allegation of armed robbery in every three days is not factual.... we patrol the community 24 hours a day''
''I cannot also refute their allegation may be it has happened but they did not report the case to us''
Nana Francis Donkor however insisted the armed robbery attacks in the community,
''In about two or three weeks we recorded one robbery incident on a Thursday at Akotokorem and one happened last Tuesday's market day where traders were attacked and the third one at Datano near a fuel station''
''And so I must confirm that all these incidents happened and infact some of these cases were not made through formal reports to the police as Commander said'' he told Nana Ampratwum on SilverFM.
He called on the President to as a matter of urgency come to their aid and fix the roads to eradicate these attacks on commuters , residents to allow smooth operation of the police.
