Hundreds of people have been rendered homeless after an inferno swept through Dagomline Line, a slum in Kumasi.

This is not the first time the slum area, predominantly occupied by head potters and scrap dealers has been destroyed by fire. The area recorded about two fire outbreaks in 2020 and another in 2019.

Wooden shacks that serve as homes for some of these people were completely burnt to the ground in the fire on Monday.

Some victims narrated the incident when they spoke to SilverNEWS reporter Akwadaa Nyame;

''We heard a heavy sound like a blast at about 4pm.......when we came out we realized that the sound was coming from the fire outbreak''

''The fire razed through all our wooden structures and some cold stores which have refrigerators in them''

The Ashanti Regional PRO of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) DO III Desmond Ackah  spoke to SilverNEWS;

''We were at the Mini Market behind the Republic Hall of the KNUST last Sunday to put out a fire outbreak...after the exercise we had about 10 containers been destroyed by fire without causing any home to students or the hall of residence.....investigations revealed that the fire was caused by one faulty refrigerators''

''Subsequently on the same day in the morning at about 11:25am we received a call from Aboabo Station that there has been a fire outbreak which was started by a welder in one of the shops...and so the welder and the one who contracted him have been picked up to assist investigation

''On Monday afternoon at about 3:53pm we received a distressed call from Dagomba line a slum area which is predominantly occupied by head potters and scrap dealers.....we cut the fire from spreading to other shops...after the exercise we detected that the fire was caused by some of the scrap dealers who use fire in their routine''

''This morning we also received a call from Suame Magazine around Methodist Church that fire had gutted a storey building which is used as a warehouse for spare parts''

''Looking all these fires we are yet to determine the true cause but we can confidently say that the unfortunate incidents are normally caused by personal negligence''

Mr Ackah also indicated that the poor setting up of wooden structures and poor accessibility, road network also affect the work of the Fire Service. He blamed victims for making late calls to the Fire Personnel after attempting to put out fire on their own.
