12 candidates were cleared to partake in this years exercise whiles five aspirants were disqualified for breaching aspects of the nomination process, for which they have been referred to the police for prosecution on the grounds of forgery.
The Presidential Candidates for this year's elections include; Alfred Walker; an independent candidate, President Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Christian Andrews; The Ghana Union Movement (GUM), Brigitte Dzogbenuku; People’s Progressive Party (PPP), John Dramani Mahama; National Democratic Congress (NDC).
The others include; Akua Donkor; Ghana Freedom Party, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings; National Democratic Party (NDP), Hassan Ayariga; All People’s Congress, Ivor Kobina Greenstreet; Convention People’s Congress (CPP), Kofi Akpaloo; Liberal Party of Ghana, David Apasera; People’s National Convention (PNC) and Henry Herbert Lartey; Great Consolidated Popular Party (GCPP).
The five aspirants below were disqualified;
1. Kofi Koranteng
2. Marricke Kofi Gane
3. Akwasi Odike
4. Kwesi Busumburu
5. Agyenim Boateng
Of the 12 qualified candidates, 11 are sponsored by political parties, while one is an independent candidate.
The EC Chairperson, Mrs Jean Mensa, who announced the outcome of the filing of nomination exercise at the EC Headquarters yesterday, said the commission extensively scrutinised the nomination forms of the aspirants to ensure that they satisfied all the requirements outlined by law to qualify as a candidate.
According to Mrs Mensa, the disqualified candidates would receive a refund of their GH¢100,000 filing fees.
“To the aspiring presidential candidates who did not make this process, we wish you better luck next time. Your filing fees of GH¢100,000 will be refunded to you,” she said.
The EC indicated that it went through a thorough review process before arriving at these decisions.
