The said provider has sent a couple of alerts to customers and mentioned that it is an international undersea fibre cable cut. Nonetheless, I will entreat anyone concerned to read on these major topics that could also be a cause of the outage.
BGP Black hole (an example : https://www.cnet.com/…/how-pakistan-knocked-youtube-offlin…/) (another useful info on BGP black hole: https://www.noction.com/blog/bgp-blackhole-community) and DDOS attack (Ref:https://www.businessinsider.com/countries-internet-shutdown...)
In assuming without admitting it is an undersea fibre cut: what happens to a backup architecture like VSAT? Again, (assuming without admitting, should a giant like MTN rely on one undersea Fibre Optic Cable?
Furthermore, what are the measures in place if in case this outage should happen on our election day since the EC in an article on Ghanaweb ( https://www.ghanaweb.com/…/EC-awards-data-centre-contract-t…) mentioned MTN to be providing internet or connectivity to district EC offices.
However, what is the regulator's stand or action or recommendations on this outage; so long as MTN plays a major role in our 2020 election.
In conclusion, I hereby state that our Cyber Institutions : National Communications Authority(N.C.A), Ghana Internet Service Providers Association (GISPA), Data Protection Agency (DPA) etc. must look beyond in-house to add up more experienced people and gadgets to help secure our cyber spectrum.
