A box of tomato selling previously at GHc 450.00 has jumped to GHc 800.00 due to the recent strike of the tomato importers and transporters (drivers) in Ghana.

According to the drivers who ply Kumasi-Bolgatanga-Burkina Faso highway, persistent armed robbery attacks on the road due to lack of security escort is the cause of the strike action. They indicated that an imminent shortage of the product is likely if the government do not intervene.

Speaking to one of the drivers on the SilverFM's Omanbapa Morning Show, Stephen Amelu told Nana Ampratwum that, about six(6) drivers have met their untimely death under the hands of these armed robbers on the Ghana-Burkina highways.

The recent one was Friday's shooting incident at Pwalugu where armed men attacked and killed a truck driver.

He said the security can help salvage the situation but have turned deaf ears to their grievances hence the decision to strike.

SilverNEWS correspondent, Agyeiwaa who visited the Kumasi Central Market, spoke to some tomato traders to solicit their views over the matter.

According to tomato importers and traders, the situation has resulted in shortage in supply of the product and a hike in prices. This has compelled them to also increase the prices of tomatoes. They said a box of tomato which was sold at GHc 450.00 is now selling at GHc800.00.

The traders are therefore pleading to the government to intervene before the shortage escalates. They also said, because of the hike in prices of tomatoes, customers now prefer purchasing tomato paste to fresh tomatoes.
